Amber Barnes, MSc
Animal welfare scientist, conservation grantmaker, and consultant with more than 20 years of experience advancing the well-being of animals.
All animals deserve moral consideration. This foundational belief has driven and continues to drive every aspect of the work I have done.
I have more than 20 years of combined experience in animal welfare, ethics, and advocacy, with an academic and professional background in assessing welfare, compiling and reviewing research, writing on ethical and welfare-related issues, developing husbandry and enrichment protocols, inspecting sanctuaries, researching organizations and their welfare practices for foundations, and consulting on animal welfare projects.
For more than a decade I have also managed international conservation and animal welfare grants, and I have evaluated more than 100 organizations. My fieldwork spans North America, Central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, and covers a variety of species including equine, farm, companion, and captive and free-ranging animals.
My expertise spans animal welfare science, conservation, philanthropy, and organizational strategy, and my approach is collaborative — grounded in evidence, curiosity, and respect for local knowledge.
It is my intention to utilize my skills and knowledge base to make a difference in the lives of animals.
